Why does nobody talk about how a hip belt can save your knees on steep descents
I always cranked my shoulder straps tight and let my hips float free, until a guy named Ray on the Eagle Rock loop in Arkansas asked why I was fighting my own pack. He told me to put 80 percent of the weight on the hip belt and loosen the shoulders, and my knees stopped screaming by mile 6. Anyone else get this backwards for way too long?
Same thing happened to me on a trip last year. Blew out my quads by day two until some old timer told me to quit hanging the pack off my shoulders. Loaded up the hip belt and it was night and day.
