Serious question, my barred rock went broody in July and I broke her with a towel and a dog crate
She was camped in the nest box for four days straight in 95 degree heat, puffing up and pecking me when I reached for eggs, so I put her in a wire crate on bricks with food and water for three days and she snapped out of it on day two, but now I'm wondering if anyone else has a hen that goes broody every single summer no matter what.
Man, three days is actually on the short side for breaking a broody, so you got lucky there. The part that's not quite right is the heat thing. Broodiness is driven by hormones and daylight, not temperature, so the 95 degrees had nothing to do with her going broody in July. A hen sitting in that kind of heat is actually in real danger since she won't leave the nest to drink, so you did the right thing getting her out of there. Wire crate on bricks is the classic setup and it works because of the air flow under her belly, not because of the bricks themselves. As for every summer, some hens are just wired that way and will go broody like clockwork once the days get long, and it's often the same girls year after year. What breed is she besides the barred rock, because some lines are way worse about this than others?
