I called the science in Twister total nonsense, then a real storm chaser set me straight
I used to pause Twister every time and roll my eyes at the part where they drive straight into the funnel, because I was sure no one would actually do that. A neighbor of mine in Norman, Oklahoma, chased storms for 11 seasons, and when I brought it up at his barbecue last month he just laughed at me. He said the movie gets a lot wrong, like the flying cows and the idea that you can outrun a tornado in a pickup, but the core thing people mock is actually real. He pulled out his phone and showed me footage from May 2013 where his team drove toward a wedge near El Reno because that is where the radar data was best. He told me, and I wrote it down, "You do not chase the tornado, you chase the road network and hope the storm misses you." That one line flipped how I watch every storm movie now, because the dumb part is not the driving, it is the timing and the escape routes. So my question for this group is, which movie science moment did you hate until somebody with actual field experience explained why it was not as dumb as it looked?
