My kid asked why the astronauts in Armageddon didn't just wait for the asteroid to pass, and I had no answer
So my 9 year old was watching Armageddon with me on Saturday and about 40 minutes in he asks why they don't just wait for the asteroid to go by, since space is mostly empty anyway. I started to explain the orbital mechanics and then realized I couldn't, because the movie never gives you a reason the rock is aimed at us on a timer. It just is. NASA actually screened this movie and the folks there reportedly hated it, and now I get why. The whole plot runs on the idea that you can blow up a rock the size of Texas with a nuke and the two halves will politely split and miss us. In real life that's like trying to stop a freight train by throwing a firecracker at it. I still love the movie, the drilling scenes and the sacrifices and all that, but my kid now thinks I'm an idiot because I told him the movie was fake and he asked follow up questions I couldn't answer. Any of you have a go to line for when a kid catches a plot hole before you do?
