The math being wrong doesn't bug me at all, but here's the thing nobody brings up. Doc Brown built a time machine out of a DeLorean, and the whole plot kicks off because he used plutonium he conned off some Libyans. If the science has to be perfect for you to enjoy it, then how do you sit through a flying car that runs on trash? The wrong number is basically another joke in a movie that's already full of them. It only gets annoying when a film acts all smart and gets basic stuff wrong, like a hacker typing fast to stop a virus. Back to the Future never pretends to be a science lesson.
