Heard a customer arguing that sourdough isn't real bread and I almost lost it

Some guy at the bakery counter yesterday was dead serious telling his friend that sourdough is just "fermented batter" and doesn't count as bread. I was standing there holding a loaf of my own starter bread and had to bite my tongue so hard. Like buddy, I've been feeding this starter for 8 months straight through night shifts and weekend chaos. Has anyone else run into people who think their grandma's white sandwich loaf is the only "real" bread out there?

Can't believe someone actually called 8 months of dedication "fermented batter," smh.

People who've never tried their hand at a real sourdough starter have no idea how much work goes into keeping one alive. 8 months is legit dedication, not some quick project.

And @briancampbell nailed it, most people have zero clue about the patience and work that goes into keeping a starter alive, let alone baking with it. Doesn't that just make you want to hand them a slice of your 8-month-old loaf and watch them eat their words?
