I used to think sourdough was just a fad until my sister's starter

My sister in Denver gave me some of her rye starter six months ago and told me to just feed it. I baked my first loaf last week and the flavor was so much deeper than my usual yeast bread. The crust was crisp and the inside had those perfect holes. Now I get why people are so into it. Has anyone else had a starter that really changed their mind?

My sister's starter survived being left in a car during a Colorado winter but I dropped mine on the floor and that was that. I guess some of them have a will to live and others just give up at the first sign of trouble. Maybe your friend's starter was already weak from the heat and that's why it cooked off so fast.

Ever kill a starter by accident?

Remember my friend who swore by quick-rise yeast? He left a jar of starter on his warm stove and it basically cooked itself, but the smell when it died was so sour it put him off for good. Some mistakes you just can't come back from, right?
