Just found out most home ovens are off by 25 degrees or more

Read it in a library book about bread baking last week. My cookies always spread too much, so I checked mine with a thermometer. Anyone else find their oven runs hot or cold?

My old apartment oven ran almost 40 degrees hot. I burned so many batches of biscuits before I bought a cheap oven thermometer. It completely changed my baking. What kind of thermometer did you end up using?

Honestly that dial thermometer saved my bacon too. My last place had this ancient gas oven that would swing like 50 degrees either way. I mean, cookies would be raw in the middle one minute, then charcoal the next. It was a total nightmare until I stuck one of those things in there and just learned to ignore the dial on the front.
