My grandma told me to stop checking my sourdough after 2 hours, and it finally rose.

She said 'the yeast is shy, stop staring at it' during our call last Tuesday, and my next loaf in Portland was the best I've ever made, so has anyone else had a baking rule from a relative that actually worked?

Honestly that's a sweet story but it's just bread. The yeast doesn't have feelings, it's a fungus. Probably just needed a warmer spot or something. Tbh people get way too into the magic of baking rules, like it's some ancient secret. It's just flour and water.

Forget the science, that rule is about your own energy... hovering over it changes the whole vibe in the kitchen.
