My neighbor's cake disaster made me rethink my oven habits

I was over at my neighbor's place yesterday and she showed me a chocolate cake that looked like a volcano. She said, 'I swear I followed the recipe exactly.' The center had sunk a full two inches! She mentioned her oven runs about 25 degrees hot, which she never adjusts for. I realized I never check my own oven's temperature either. Has anyone else fixed a baking fail just by using an oven thermometer?

Oh man, my oven is a total mystery box! I just cross my fingers and hope for the best every time. An oven thermometer is probably the smart move I keep avoiding.

Haha, the mystery box oven struggle is so real! Okay, but what are you usually baking when it goes totally off the rails? Like, is it cookies coming out burnt, or a cake that just won't cook in the middle? I feel like some recipes are way less forgiving than others when the temperature is even a little wrong.
