Overheard a mom at the grocery store telling her kid 'it's just flour' after a cake disaster
I was grabbing butter yesterday and this little girl was almost crying because their birthday cake fell apart. Her mom just laughed and said, 'Honey, it's just flour and eggs, we can try again.' It really stuck with me because I get so mad when my stuff doesn't turn out perfect. I tried making macarons again this morning and messed up the first batch, but I just started over instead of giving up. Anyone else have a simple thing someone said that helped you chill out about baking fails?

That's a nice story, but honestly, it wouldn't work for me. Sometimes it's not "just flour." It's the time and the money you spent, especially with prices these days. A failed cake can feel like a real waste. I get being kind to a kid, but for an adult, that line feels a bit too simple. It's okay to be frustrated when things go wrong. That frustration is what makes you careful next time.

Last weekend I ruined a batch of brownies that cost me nearly fifteen dollars in good chocolate and butter. I was ready to throw the whole pan in the trash. But then I remembered my grandmother telling me "you can't learn to make anything good without wasting some food first." It wasn't the same words as that mom but the idea is the same. I scraped the burnt bits off and turned it into brownie truffles. Maybe they weren't perfect but we ate them just fine.
