My kid's school banned 'best friend' and the note they sent home had 3 sentences
So my daughter came home from 3rd grade in Naperville last week and said her teacher told the class they can't say 'best friend' anymore because it leaves other kids out. The letter they sent parents said the word 'creates exclusion' and asked us to use 'good friend' or 'close friend' instead. I get wanting everyone included, but telling 8 year olds they can't have a best friend feels like it's fixing something that wasn't broken. Has any other parent dealt with a school banning a word like this, and did you push back or just let it go?
Honestly a friend of mine went through this exact thing in Ohio and her son got written up for telling his buddy he was his best friend on the playground. The whole thing blew over after like two weeks because the teachers couldn't keep up with policing every friendship and the kids just kept saying it anyway. So ngl I'd probably just let it go and not waste energy fighting a rule that nobody can actually enforce.
