Appreciation post: my bank's fraud alert system flagged a small, real purchase and missed a big one

Last month, I bought a $4 coffee on my debit card and got an immediate fraud alert text. I confirmed it was me. Then, two days later, a $500 charge for an online electronics store I've never used went through with no alert at all. I had to call to dispute it. In my experience, their system seems tuned to flag small, oddball purchases but not bigger ones from new merchants. It makes me wonder if the rules are too simple. Has anyone else had their bank's fraud detection miss a large, obvious charge while stopping something tiny?

Yeah, that "tuned to flag small, oddball purchases" thing is spot on. Their logic seems backwards, catching the coffee but letting the big one slide. Makes the whole system feel pretty useless when it misses the actual problem.

Ever feel like the system's just messing with you?

Actually, the big charge probably did get flagged. Their system just puts a hold on small ones first. Lets the big ones post while they investigate.
