Just realized I been paying an extra $12 a month in bank fees for like 3 years
I was looking through my checking account statements last night trying to figure out why my balance never seemed to grow. Then I noticed a $12 monthly maintenance fee every single month since 2022. I thought it was normal because I had a basic account but apparently if you keep your balance above $1,500 they wave it. I never knew that because I just signed up online and never talked to anyone. My sister told me about a credit union she uses that has zero fees even with low balances. Now I'm thinking about switching banks completely but I'm worried about moving all my automatic payments. Has anyone else dealt with hidden fees like this after years of not noticing?

Credit unions love to brag about no fees, but they also send you a Christmas card with a handwritten note from a teller named Brenda, so you're trading one kind of weird for another. Four hundred and thirty two bucks just vanished into the bank's pocket, and I bet they didn't even buy you a drink with it. At this point, you might as well switch and spend that $12 a month on something that makes you feel alive.

Moving all my automatic payments" is exactly what scared me too, but I just made a checklist and swapped them one by one over a weekend. Credit unions are way better about fees, I switched to one last year and haven't paid a cent since.
