Lost $180 to a wire transfer fee I didn't even need to pay
Sent my sister rent money through my bank last week and got hit with $180 in fees between the wire charge and the currency markup, when her credit union would've taken it for free. Anyone know a bank that doesn't gouge you on international transfers, or am I stuck eating this every month?

Did you even ask your bank what the wire fee would be before you sent it? I used to figure all banks were the same on this stuff, that a wire was just a wire and you eat the cost. Then my wife sent money to her mom overseas and we got dinged almost two hundred bucks, same deal as you, and it made me actually look at the fine print. Turns out some places charge a flat fee plus a hidden markup on the exchange rate, which is where they really get you. Call your sister's credit union and ask if you can just push money to her account directly, because mine lets me do that now for like five bucks. Lesson learned the hard way, I guess.
