Pro tip: Your bank's 'pending' charges aren't always what you think

I just realized a lot of people, including me for a long time, think a pending charge is the final amount. It's not... it's often just a temporary hold. My gas station puts a $100 hold on my card for a $40 fill-up, and it sits there for a day or two. I called my credit union, First Federal here in town, and they confirmed it's up to the merchant. This really matters if you're watching your balance closely and think you have more money than you do. Has anyone else had a pending charge that was way off from the final bill?

Didn't that used to drive you nuts?

But isn't that the whole point of the pending notice? It's a clear heads-up that a charge is coming, even if the amount is a guess. That temporary hold stops you from spending money you know you already used. Without it, you could easily overdraft thinking that gas money was still free to spend.
