Vent: I was scanning checks wrong for like 2 years

At my old job at a credit union in Spokane, I always just scanned checks face down with the MICR line at the top. A new manager walked by one day and asked why I was doing it that way. She said the reader actually works better with the MICR line at the bottom. I tested it out and suddenly my error rate dropped from about 15% to almost zero. Anyone else have a simple process they were doing backwards the whole time?

Hold on a second, I gotta push back on this one. Are you honestly telling me that your scanner is so picky it cares which direction the check is facing? I've worked with a bunch of different scanners and the only thing that ever mattered was the check was flat and not crumpled, not some top or bottom rule. It sounds like that manager was just looking for something to say instead of actually helping you with real work. Your 15% error rate probably just dropped because you finally paid attention to the process after someone called you out.
