Found out India banned 59 Chinese apps overnight in 2020
I read this article from BBC that said TikTok and UC Browser were among them. Over 200 million users lost access just like that. How does a government decide what information you can't see?

Oh come on, is blocking some apps really that big of a deal? India banned TikTok and a bunch of other apps nobody really needed anyway. People acted like the internet was ending but then they just downloaded Indian alternatives like Chingari or Roposo and life went on. I bet half those users forgot what apps they lost within a week. The government probably saw some security risk or wanted to boost local companies, it's not like they banned Instagram or YouTube.

Chingari and Roposo were around before the ban actually (they just saw a huge spike in users afterward). The whole thing caught a lot of smaller creators off guard who didn't have the same reach on those platforms right away. It wasn't a total disaster for most people, but calling it no big deal kinda ignores the scrambling that happened for a while.
