Hit 500 signatures on my petition to unblock Wikipedia in Turkey, and it came from the weirdest place
So I started this small petition about 4 months ago after reading how Turkey blocked Wikipedia for over 2 years back in 2017, and honestly I figured maybe 50 people would sign it. Last night it crossed 500, which blew my mind. The thing is, most of those signatures came from a single post I made in a Turkish expat group on Facebook, not from any of the big free speech forums I spammed for weeks. A guy named Emre in Berlin shared it with his whole family and they all signed it in one evening. I know 500 names does not change any law, but the court in Ankara actually reversed that ban in 2020, so petitions do sometimes work. What got me was how many people wrote comments about missing simple stuff, like looking up a recipe or a soccer score. Curious if anyone here has run a petition like this and actually got a reply from a government office, because I have no clue what to do with the signatures now.
So your big free speech warriors on those forums couldn't be bothered but a random Turkish guy in Berlin got his whole family to sign in one night? Sounds about right, the internet is a weird place and expat groups always beat the big forums somehow. As for what to do next, you can send it to the office that handled the case, but don't hold your breath on a reply, most of them treat petitions like junk mail.
