Just realized our banned book list is way shorter than my aunt's in Turkey
Was chatting with my cousin's wife from Istanbul over video last week, and she listed 12 authors banned there right now, most I'd never heard of. She said even checking the list is risky, and that hit me because here we argue about what to ban, there they just do it. Does anyone else think we focus too much on the wrong fights, or is talking about it the only real defense we have?

Funny thing is, my town's book club once "banned" a book because nobody could get past the second chapter, so we're clearly on the cutting edge of censorship over here. But yeah, hearing that about Turkey puts things in perspective, makes our library drama feel like arguing over the last slice of pizza. Talking about it is probably the best we've got, though, even if half the time we're just yelling into the void (which I do regularly, ask my cat). Still, at least we get to yell, and that's a privilege a lot of folks don't have, so maybe we should use it more wisely.
