My city banned lawn signs, so I found another way to speak
Last fall in Austin, they passed a rule against political yard signs on public easements. I got a $75 ticket for a sign that said "Honk for Housing" and it sat right on my property line. Instead of fighting it, I painted my own message on a recycled wood board and hung it from my porch rail, no ground contact at all. The city still tried to cite me, but a neighbor snapped a photo and the local paper picked it up. Anyone else ever dealt with a ban that just pushed your message somewhere else?

That $75 ticket probably made the paper worth it. Clever move with the porch rail, property lines are a gray area and cities hate losing that fight. The photo angle was the real winner though, public shaming gets more done than any appeal. I figure every rule like this just dares people to get creative with their message. Did the city ever actually back down or just drop the case quietly?
