My skepticism about that German butter ban turned into a 4 month butter hunt
I read about Germany banning a specific type of imported butter back in March and honestly thought it was just some paranoid foodie drama. Then my buddy who lives in Munich sent me a photo of empty dairy shelves at his local Edeka and a sign explaining the ban was about trade disputes over pasteurization standards. I laughed it off until my own local store stopped carrying my usual Irish butter block three weeks later. Turns out the ban ripple effect hit importers here in Chicago and I spent two months driving to four different stores just to find any butter that wasn't the cheap stick stuff. The kicker was when a store manager told me the ban was about protecting local German dairies from foreign competition under EU rules. Now I buy three pounds whenever I see the good stuff in stock. Has anyone else found themselves scrambling for a basic food item because of some trade ban that seemed silly at first?

@alices16 you had me at olive oil scramble. But heres my question: did the store manager actually say when this ban might end or was it just a shrug? Because I got the same vaguely useless answer from a store manager here. He said that the ban could last six months or six years depending on how the EU trade talks went. I have zero trust in any timeline. The worst part is that now I treat butter like some kind of emergency supply. I have four pounds in my freezer right now and I still get anxious whenever I walk past the dairy aisle. Its like the butter turned into a drug and Im a hoarder. Had anything like that happen with your olive oil situation where you started stockpiling way more than you needed?

Totally feel you on this one. I went through something similar when they banned a certain imported olive oil from Italy last year because of some label dispute. Suddenly my go to brand was gone from the shelves and I spent weeks checking every random grocery store in my area like a total lunatic. It's wild how fast a "silly" trade thing can mess up your whole routine. Now I hoard that butter too whenever I spot it, never know when it'll vanish again.
