PSA: My cousin in Singapore said they can't even talk about the last election online.

Honestly, it hit different because she said 'we just pretend it didn't happen' and that's how it starts everywhere. Has anyone else had a friend from a place with strict speech laws just casually drop something like that?

A friend from Hong Kong told me something similar last year. He said people there have started using code words for certain political figures in group chats. It's a small thing, but it shows how careful you have to become. That kind of self-censorship just becomes normal after a while. It's scary how fast people adapt to not being able to speak freely.
