Rant: I used to defend TikTok bans as protecting kids, now I see it differently

After China blocked TikTok in 2020 and then rolled out their own censored version, I realized banning a platform just gives the government more control over what you see. Has anyone else had a shift like this after seeing how bans actually play out in other countries?

@the_william nailed it. I actually went through the same thing after watching what happened with TikTok in India. They banned it back in 2020 and now the local apps that popped up are just as bad if not worse with data collection. The whole ban just handed more control to the government and big companies. It's like people forget that once a platform gets banned there's no going back to the original version. And the worst part is kids still find ways around the bans through VPNs and stuff so they end up on even sketchier sites.

Yeah that's fair. Never thought about it like that before.
