Rant: my brother in law said Germany bans certain words online and I didn't believe him
My brother in law lives in Berlin and we got into it over dinner about what you can actually post over there. He pulled up his phone and showed me the NetzDG law, said platforms have 24 hours to pull hate speech or face fines up to 50 million euros. I figured he was exaggerating until he showed me a news story about a guy fined for a post that would be totally legal here. It hit different because I always assumed speech rules were pretty much the same across the West. Turns out Germany, France, and the UK all have laws about what you can say online that would never fly in the US. I spent two hours after dinner reading about it and barely scratched the surface. Anyone here actually live in one of those countries and can tell me how it works day to day?
