Still wrapping my head around Germany banning Amazon's 'Glow' for kids

I was reading some tech news last Tuesday and found out Germany banned Amazon's Glow device before it even really launched. Apparently the thing has a camera that projects interactive stuff onto a mat for kids, and German regulators said it violates their strict data privacy laws for minors. I never even knew this product existed until I saw the ban article. Has anyone else run into a situation where a country banned something you had never even heard of before?
