Banned copy of 1984 from Romania taught me more than school did

Back in 2017 I traded a guy in Bucharest, a street vendor named Andrei, two packs of American cigarettes for a dog-eared Romanian copy of 1984. He told me the government still lists it as 'problematic' there, not fully banned but not sold in shops. Holding that thing with its Cyrillic notes in the margins made me realize how much context we miss when we just read the English version. Has anyone else picked up a banned book in another country and gotten a totally different read?
