Browsed a book stall in Kuala Lumpur and found a censored copy of '1984'

I was at Petaling Street market last weekend and this vendor had a stack of Orwell's 1984 with whole paragraphs blacked out in marker. Turns out the Malaysian edition had been trimmed to remove bits about government surveillance, which is wild since that's the whole point of the book. The vendor just shrugged and said it's been like that since the 80s. Has anyone else run into censored versions of classics that actually make the book less understandable?

Try ordering the Penguin or Vintage edition online instead, those usually slip through intact. Otherwise grab a used copy from a shop that imports from the UK, I've had better luck there.
