Chose to read Slaughterhouse-Five instead of returning it to the school library in 2003
When I was a junior in high school in Bakersfield, our English teacher pulled Slaughterhouse-Five off the shelf after a parent complaint, and we were told to swap it for a different book for our free reading unit. I kept my copy anyway and just read it in the back of class while everyone else did their replacement book. I got a C on the unit because I couldn't write about the swap, but Vonnegut ended up being the reason I actually started reading for fun. The parent who complained never said what part bothered her, she just waved the book at a board meeting and called it filth. Anyone else pick a banned book over a grade like that?
