Comparing two translations of The Satanic Verses changed how I saw the banned sections

I picked up the original UK printing of The Satanic Verses and then a later US edition side by side last weekend. The UK version had extra footnotes about the historical context that the US one cut out, which made me understand why certain passages were seen as offensive. Has anyone else noticed differences between international editions of famously banned books?

Three different publishers in India each cut different passages from the same book depending on which politician they were scared of that week. One version actually added a disclaimer apologizing for the author's "confusion" which I thought was a pretty creative way to avoid a lawsuit. Guess censorship just depends on who's paying the printer.
