I actually think the school was right to pull 'The Bluest Eye' from my kid's 9th grade reading list in Plano
The book itself doesn't bother me, but handing a novel about child sexual abuse to a room of 14 year olds without any heads up to parents in a district with no counselor ratio better than 1 to 600 is not censorship versus protection, it's just bad planning, and if you'd sat in that September meeting in Plano you might think so too, so what would you have done instead of pulling it?
Wouldn't the better move be to keep the book but send a note home in August explaining what it covers and why the teacher picked it? Parents who want to opt their kid out can do that, and the other 90 percent still get to read a book that a lot of teachers say opens real conversations about hard stuff. Pulling it for everyone because the district can't hire enough counselors feels like punishing the whole class for a staffing problem. That 1 to 600 ratio is the actual issue here, not Toni Morrison.
