Just realized my neighbor had no idea why 'Maus' was banned in Tennessee

We were talking about graphic novels and he said he'd heard of it but thought it was just a sad comic about mice. I explained the 2022 school board vote to remove it, and how they called the nudity and language 'unnecessary'. He got quiet and said, 'So they banned a book about the Holocaust for being too honest.' It hit different because he's a history teacher. Has anyone else had to explain a specific ban to someone who just didn't know the details?

What he'll tell his students" is the real question. He'll probably just say he was wrong, which is a pretty basic lesson on its own.
