Official reading list versus street corner book swap, no contest

My high school in Tucson had this approved reading list that cut half the classics for being too edgy. Last month I hit a little free library downtown and grabbed a beat-up copy of Slaughterhouse-Five that was on the school's no-go list. Reading it outside the system hit different, like I finally got why people fight over this stuff. The school version felt sanitized, the street copy made me question everything. Has anyone else found banned titles hit harder when you snag them outside official channels?
