Reading the unedited version vs the school edition of The Chocolate War made me see what we lost

My high school library in Portland had the censored version where they cut the bullying scenes down to nothing. Picked up the full text last summer and the story actually made sense for once. The school edition was like reading a summary with the teeth pulled out. Has anyone else compared a classroom version to the original and felt kind of robbed?

Did you catch how the school version even changed the ending? I heard the original is way darker, and Cormier basically wrote it to trash the whole "be yourself" slogan they push on kids.
