The week my high school librarian slipped me a banned copy of 'The Chocolate War'
It was back in 2005, junior year at Lincoln High in Portland. My librarian Mrs. Chen pulled me aside one Tuesday and handed me a beat-up paperback wrapped in a brown paper bag. She whispered that the school board had pulled it from shelves three years ago for 'language and sexual content.' I read the whole thing in two days and honestly it blew my mind how questioning authority could get a book banned. Has anyone else had a librarian secretly share a banned book with them?

My high school librarian in 99 did the same thing with Catcher in the Rye. She kept a hidden shelf behind her desk for books the district banned. Smart move wrapping it in a brown bag so the other teachers couldn't spot it.

Oh the brown bag trick takes me back, my school librarian in '98 did the same thing with "The Chocolate War." She had a whole hidden shelf behind the fiction section, and you'd give her a secret nod if you wanted one of those books. It felt like being in a secret club or something (which is honestly how you want teenagers to feel about reading).
