The weird way Maus keeps getting misinterpreted in my local book club
I run a small banned books group with about 8 people from my town. We read Maus earlier this year and I was surprised how many folks just see it as 'the Holocaust comic.' They miss how Spiegelman is also talking about family trauma and guilt. Three people said they didn't get why it was banned until I showed them the scene with the dead mice. Did your group miss something obvious about a banned book too?

Wait, THREE people didn't get why Maus was banned until you showed them the dead mice panel? That's wild to me because the whole thing is crawling with heavy stuff from page one, not just the obvious Nazi cat and mouse stuff. I figured the scenes with Vladek's PTSD and the way he treats Artie would clue anyone in that it's way more than a Holocaust history lesson.

Yeah a friend told me something similar happened with her book club @burns.ruby, crazy how people miss the obvious stuff.
