Took me 5 years to find out why my hometown library banned 'The Color Purple'.
I finally dug through old city council minutes from 1985 and it wasn't about the language or sex stuff, it was because a local pastor claimed it 'promoted atheism through female independence' - has anyone else found weird local reasons like this?

Wow that's wild. I never thought about "female independence" being framed as atheism. But honestly it makes a twisted kind of sense if you think about it. A woman not needing a man or a church to define her worth? That scares people who want control. I've seen similar stuff in my own town with books about civil rights. They didn't ban them outright just made sure nobody checked them out by hiding them in a back room. So it's never just about one thing. It's always about power and keeping certain voices quiet. Glad you found the truth though.
