Unpopular opinion: People keep saying '1984' is the most banned book in the US right now.
The ALA's 2023 list shows it's actually 'Gender Queer' by Maia Kobabe, which makes the whole 'classics only' argument feel pretty selective. Anyone else notice this pattern in their local library debates?

Spot on, it's always the same few classics getting shouted about while the actual most challenged books fly under the radar. Saw this exact thing happen at my town's school board meeting last month, someone ranting about Fahrenheit 451 while the list on the table was full of modern YA. Makes you wonder what they're really trying to protect kids from, right?

Fahrenheit 451 at a school board meeting? Seriously?

Makes you wonder what they're really trying to protect kids from" - I mean, do we really need to wonder that hard? People get riled up about a graphic novel, someone brings up Fahrenheit 451, and suddenly it's a big censorship debate. Feels like we're overcomplicating what's basically just parents being picky about library shelves.
