Back in high school in Ohio, our librarian kept Slaughterhouse-Five behind the desk and you needed a signed note to touch it, so I just never bothered. I found a used copy for two bucks at a garage sale in Toledo three weeks ago and read it in a weekend. It's a war book with some crude language, sure, but nothing in it was worse than what I saw on the news every night. What bugs me is how much a single complaint from one parent in 1998 decided what an entire school of kids could read. Did anyone else grow up with a banned book that turned out totally fine, or was yours actually rough?
