Got pulled from the booth after one frank review, still not sure who was right

I do sports play-by-play for a small radio station near Topeka, and back in March I called a high school basketball game where I said the home team's star player was 'coasting on reputation.' The coach heard it and got me benched for the rest of the season. His argument was that I should pump up local kids, not tear them down. My station manager backed him, but a handful of listeners called in and said they appreciated the honesty. Now I'm wondering, is there a line between fair criticism and killing a kid's confidence, or should we always err on the side of boosting them? Anyone else get censored for being too direct about a local figure, and did you change your approach after?
