One clerk in a small town bookstore changed how I talk about banned books
Back in 2019 I was in Asheville and walked into this tiny used bookshop, the kind with cats on the counters. I mentioned I was collecting challenged titles for my classroom, and the owner, this older guy with a scar on his thumb, just said, "People ban what they're afraid to explain, not what they've read." He then pulled out a dog-eared copy of Slaughterhouse-Five and told me he'd sold it to three different school librarians who each got warned about it. That stuck with me more than any online ban, because he made it feel like a quiet game of keep passing the book along, no matter who frets.
