That one commenter who told me my recipe posts were hurting the community's credibility

I was posting my grandma's empanada recipe in a Cuban food forum and someone DM'd me saying I was spreading unsafe canning advice by not specifying pressure times. They pointed out I'd skipped mentioning the 11 psi minimum for low-acid fillings. What's your policy on calling out bad food safety info in your own circles?

yeah food safety is no joke, i've been that guy too. if someone's posting a recipe that could actually make people sick, you gotta say something. i'd rather risk them getting defensive for a minute than have someone's grandma end up in the ER from botulism. what worked for me was messaging them privately first with something like "hey love the recipe, just a heads up that filling needs higher psi to be safe" and then linking to the actual USDA guidelines. most people appreciate it if you don't call them out publicly. if they get hostile then i just drop it, the info's out there and they can ignore it if they want. but staying quiet about dangerous stuff is not cool, that's how people get hurt.

Got a DM once from a guy telling me my brisket rub was culturally appropriating his region's barbecue traditions. Still don't know if he was serious or just bored. Might have been the one time I forgot to put salt in a chili recipe too.
