That whole "cancel culture" panel I got booted from actually had a point
I got invited to a local community forum in Austin about free speech online, and I went in ready to rant about how everyone's too sensitive. But after they kicked me out for interrupting the moderator like three times, I sat outside and listened through the door. Turns out one of the speakers was a teacher who got fired for posting a joke about a student, and it really made me think about where the line actually is. I still think some bans are crazy, but hearing that story made me realize not every censor is just about hurt feelings. Has anyone else changed their mind after getting shown the door?

Sometimes getting thrown out is the best way to actually hear what's being said. That teacher story hits different when you're not in the middle of arguing. It's easy to scream about principles until you're faced with a real person's ruined career.

There's a difference between getting thrown out because you crossed a line and getting thrown out because someone just didn't want to deal with the truth. The teacher story is tragic, sure, but what about the kid who gets expelled because a zero tolerance policy leaves no room for them to explain? I've seen situations where a student made a dumb mistake and got labeled a problem forever, while the adult who overreacted walked away clean. Principles matter because without them, you end up with bullies in positions of power using stories like that as a shield.
