Got banned from a recipe site for saying canned tomatoes beat fresh in winter soups
I posted on this big cooking forum that canned San Marzanos are way better than those pale, mealy fresh tomatoes from the grocery store in January. A mod deleted my comment and gave me a warning for "disrespecting fresh ingredients." I pushed back with a link to a Bon Appetit article that said the same thing, and boom, permabanned in under 2 hours. Anyone else get banned for some minor food opinion that sounds wild in hindsight?

Hold on, I gotta side with the mods on this one. You're telling me that a mushy, watery crushed can is somehow better than a real, living thing I grew myself? I can walk out to my garden in August, grab a Sungold that tastes like candy, and throw it in a soup. That's miles ahead of any metallic-tasting tomato that's been sitting in a warehouse for six months. And linking to some foodie article like it's a court case? Come on, that's just being a difficult guest in their house. It's their forum, their rules, and you knew exactly what you were doing.

Actually read somewhere that canned tomatoes are picked at peak ripeness and processed within hours, while "fresh" ones from the store are often picked green and gassed to turn red. Not saying your garden Sungolds aren't amazing, just that there's a reason chefs stock up on good canned stuff for winter cooking.
