One mod's comment about my tone made me rewrite my whole approach to comments

Got kicked from a gardening sub after a mod said my advice came off like a lecture, so now I start every reply with a question instead of a statement, and it's wild how much better people take the same tips, has anyone else had to flip their whole style after one piece of feedback?

and honestly that's the thing that gets me, is the difference between "you should do X" and "have you tried X" or "what's your soil like when you water" changes the whole vibe of a reply. i mean, i get why mods would be tired of tone policing all day, but did they actually tell you what specific phrase or sentence pushed them over the edge, or was it just a general "you come off as a know it all" kind of thing? because i've had that happen in a woodworking forum and it took me forever to figure out it wasn't what i said, it was that i answered before asking if they'd already tried the obvious fix. did you have to unlearn a bunch of little habits too, or was it one big obvious thing?
