Rant: Got banned from a gardening forum for saying peat moss is unsustainable

Last spring I posted in a big gardening group about switching from peat moss to coconut coir. I said something like peat takes hundreds of years to form and we're stripping bogs that store carbon. A few people got defensive, then a moderator deleted my post and banned me for 30 days. They claimed I was pushing an agenda, but I was just repeating what my local extension office told me. Has anyone else run into this where basic facts get treated like attacks?

My buddy got kicked out of a local hiking club for bringing up that dogs off leash can mess up ground nesting birds. He just linked a state DNR page and everything. What worked for me on a native plant forum was sending the mod a private message first next time. I said hey I'm not trying to start a fight, just sharing what the extension office told me. They actually wrote me back and thanked me for explaining. It's a pain to have to tiptoe around facts but sometimes picking your battles means starting with one person at a time.

Tiptoe around facts" - more like do the hokey pokey with your gardening opinions while hopping on one foot blindfolded. The mod probably went full Rambo on your post because you threatened their precious bog-emperor's new clothes situation. Next time just send them a strongly worded letter written on a piece of peat moss with a dying earthworm stamp. See how they like that carbon drama.

Whoa @kim_nelson, peat moss is actually harvested from bogs, not made with drowning earthworms.
