My friend in Portland warned me about posting a certain meme last month

He said the image of the politician with the edited caption would get flagged, and I didn't listen. Sure enough, my account on a big platform got a 30 day suspension for 'harmful misinformation'. It makes me wonder where the line is between a joke and something they think is dangerous. Has anyone else had a meme taken down that was just meant to be silly?

Yeah, my buddy had something like that happen. He posted a silly picture of a cartoon character with a fake quote from a local news anchor, just a dumb joke about the weather. The platform took it down for "false claims" and gave him a warning. It wasn't political or anything, just a goof. He tried to appeal it, but it was all automated replies. It really does feel like they can't tell the difference between a joke and something actually bad anymore.

Ugh, @dakota_singh39, the bots are gonna start flagging knock-knock jokes as hate speech soon, lol.

Oh man, that's frustrating! I actually read an article from the Electronic Frontier Foundation about this. They said platforms like Facebook and X are using automated systems that can't understand context or sarcasm at all. So a meme that's obviously a joke to humans looks the same as a real fake news post to their algorithms. The article mentioned one case where a parody account got banned for posting a silly photoshopped picture of a celebrity holding a fish that was supposedly from a fake news story. Seems like they need to hire actual people to review these things instead of just relying on bots.
