PSA: My hostel wifi blocked a meme I shared from Vietnam
I was in Hanoi trying to send friends a funny local meme about street food. The hostel's network flagged it and removed the post right away. It reminded me of when you could share anything online without worry. Now even jokes get caught in filters, and it feels like speech isn't so free anymore. Makes you wonder who gets to decide what's okay worldwide.

It's worse than just memes getting blocked. In Vietnam, people have gotten in real trouble for online posts the government didn't like. The filters on that wifi are just a small part of a bigger system watching what gets said. It makes you question if any joke is really just a joke there.

Heard about that blogger in Hanoi who got six months for mocking a local official on Facebook. Totally see what you mean, it's scary how normal posts can become crimes overnight. I had a friend visiting family there who shared a meme about traffic cops, and her cousin told her to delete it right away or risk a fine. The government has teams scanning for keywords, so anything from jokes about leaders to complaints about pollution can flag your account. Makes you wonder if speaking your mind online is ever safe in places like that.

Exactly, and xenarobinson's point shows it's not just wifi. That control makes the whole internet feel fragile there. A blocked meme is one thing, but real fines change how everyone acts. It just teaches people to be careful, not free.
