Getting my poster approved after three rounds of edits at a Michigan college
My department kept rejecting my flyer for a panel on campus speech because the wording was 'too direct' even though the event was open to the public. I finally switched to neutral phrasing like 'exchange of differing opinions' and added a disclaimer that the university supports free expression. Has anyone else tried adjusting language to satisfy an administrator instead of hiring a lawyer?
The part nobody talks about is how this trains admins to keep doing it. You gave them "exchange of differing opinions" and a free speech disclaimer, so now that's the bar for every flyer that comes through. I watched this happen at a state school in Ohio where the activities office started asking every club to run their posts by them first, and the anime club got flagged for a word in Japanese that was on a test list of "possible slang." Once folks start rewriting before they even get told no, the review never ends because you already showed them you'll do it.
