Got silenced at a town hall in Ohio, ended up winning a school board seat anyway
Back in 2019 I tried to speak at a public meeting about the new speech code they were rolling out at the community college near me. They cut my mic after 90 seconds, said I was being disruptive for reading the policy out loud. I was so angry I filed a complaint and started going to every meeting after that. Six months later I ran for the board myself and won by 112 votes. Now I sit on the same committee that approved that code, and I voted to repeal it last spring. We got it changed to just a standard respectful conduct rule. Anyone else get pushed out of one door and end up walking through a bigger one?
How many of those people who were at that meeting with you ended up getting involved because they watched what happened to you? That's the part nobody talks about. Like yeah you got silenced and that was wrong, but the room full of people who saw it also got a lesson in what happens when you show up. My niece went to a school board meeting last year just to complain about a book and ended up on some parent committee because three other moms came up to her after and said they felt the same way but were scared to talk. It's like the mic getting cut does more to wake people up than the speech itself ever could.
